Software may be designated as general purpose Operating systems (Windows, NetWare, Linux, Open Solaris etc), virtualising operating systems (VMWare, Virtual Iron etc), dedicated NAS / iSCSI operating systems (Open-E, Open Filer, OpenNAS etc) or storage virtualising software which runs on standard operating systems (Datacore, Falconstor).

LSI MegaRAID PCIe SAS RAID controller HBAs are accredited for use with RAIDFLEX Open Storage Appliances, and have a dedicated storage management GUI. These controllers are suitable for internal SAS connectivity with subsequent expansion through SAS expanders, and the external ports are suitable for adding JBOD storage to "non-expandable" appliances and third party servers.
Accusys ACS-61xxxx PCIe SATA RAID controller HBAs are accredited for use with RAIDFLEX Open Storage Appliances, and have a dedicated storage management GUI. These controllers range from 4-ports to 24-ports and are suitable for non-expandable arrays where only SATA drives are required.
